Hello!
I’m Matt Comer. I was raised in Winston-Salem, N.C., but Charlotte has been my home since 2007. I love this city and I am proud to call it my adopted hometown. I have more than a decade of professional experience in keeping ideas, communities, and organizations moving and communicating. I've worn many hats in my nearly 20-year career: blogger, reporter, newspaper editor, magazine designer, web designer, event planner, operations and logistics director, media spokesperson, and so much more.
From 2007 to 2015, I worked as editor of QNotes, Charlotte’s LGBTQ community newspaper. In 2008, I began my service to Charlotte Pride as a volunteer and board member. In 2017, I became a staff member at Charlotte Pride, ending my staff tenure in December 2022 as director of operations and communications.
I currently work as director of communications and digital engagement for St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Outside of work, I continue my volunteer support for Charlotte Pride and serve as a deacon at my home church, St. John’s Baptist; I recently finished a time of service on board of directors of the U.S. Association of Prides.
I am currently pursuing a graduate certificate course of study at BSK Theological Seminary (formerly Baptist Seminary of Kentucky). In May 2025, I was granted the Exploring Ministry Level 1 Certificate; I’ll complete the Level 2 certificate in the 2025-2026 academic year as I continue discerning entry into the full M.Div. program.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling to the Blue Ridge Mountains, studying history and family genealogy, and tending to my small and humble flower garden.
About this site and newsletter
It’s been years since I’ve taken time to write personal commentaries, essays, and other long-form content just for myself. Back in the aughts, during the height of the “blogosphere” (remember that?), I wrote prolifically on my own site and contributed to several others. But, after years of writing professionally for other people, I recently got the urge to start writing for myself again.
I don’t have any plans to make this a paid newsletter or subscription site like many other Substack writers. It’s just an opportunity for me to jot down my thoughts and share them with the world.
From time-to-time, you might also see a guest post or two from my fiancé, Weston.
If you want, you can subscribe to get email updates when I (or Weston) publish new posts. It’s free.
